No matter how united this may make/seem to make America, this will majorly hurt the economy. We are in a recession still; do you wish to stay stuck in it? I surely don’t. There is a difference between a series of national bus boycotts and an international(or just national) boycott on all types of large label media merchandise. States help with the funding of their individual bus companies if I remember right.. We’re talking about taking away from something that gets its money from the people who only want to enjoy music. Without us, they’ll die. Without them, the government will fall again. I get it, that’s what the protesters are getting at, but do you SERIOUSLY want to send the whole country back into the whole deeper than it is? Not to be rude, but this sounds selfish. Boycotting this would hurt more than the government.COME ON GUYS.
LETS DO THIS.
Guys this is stupid.
You’ll hurt the economy more than help.
This won’t stop SOPA. This’ll only hurt everyone more.
I can see why you would think that, but it’s an incorrect assumption. Until very recently, broadcast news (even including programs such as The Daily Show) were virtually silent on issues like the Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act. It wasn’t until a mass effort was started by the users and moderators of websites such as Reddit, Craigslist, Wikipedia, and Wired, that any real attention was seen. The effects? At least ten U.S. Senators have withdrawn their support for SOPA and PIPA.
Boycotting has proven to be a successful protesting strategy in the past, with examples such as The Montgomery Bus Boycott in 1955, The Grape Boycott in the 1960’s, and The Anti-Apartheid Boycotts of the 1980’s/90’s. However, perhaps most closely related was the Great American Boycott of 2006. This was a one day strike led by legal and illegal immigrants against all schools and businesses in the United States that helped raise awareness about immigration reform. Just as this one day strike on all businesses didn’t cause any longterm damage, neither will a month long boycott of one facet of our economy.
It will, however, show that Americans can be united when they believe in a just cause.
